Universal/Restricted materials include the following

What they have in common,  is the fact that they pose certain environmental, financial and safety risks and should be handled and disposed of properly.

Lamps► Examples of common universal waste electric lamps include (but are not limited to): fluorescent, high-intensity discharge, neon, mercury-vapor, high-pressure sodium and metal halide lamps.

Ballasts► are regulated under the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) and Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) and require proper disposal. Facilities disposing of ballasts containing PCB's and other toxic components must have their ballasts disposed of by a permitted facility. Companies that illegally dispose of their ballasts in dumpsters or landfills are liable for superfund clean-up costs.

Batteries► are a waste that can be recycled for further use. Due to the "Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act of 1996", batteries should be recycled to avoid the long term damage caused by landfill disposal. Examples: Alkaline, NiCad, Lead Acid, Magnesium, Lithium, Zinc-Carbon.

Thermostats► any temperature control device that contains metallic mercury in an ampoule with a bi-metal sensing element and mercury-containing ampoules that have been removed from these devices must be adequately handled and disposed of.

Computer devices► monitors, PC's, circuit boards (frequently fail TCLP benchmark for metals) and others. As of 1992, the EPA has banned the land filling of CRT's, which can contain 5-8 pounds of lead each.

Electronics devices► cell/office phones, PDA's, calculators, etc. – These devices can contain chemicals harmful to our environment, drinking water and potentially pose long-term concerns.

Other potentially hazardous items► printer/toner cartridges, empty cleaning supply containers, pesticides, etc.

All generators of waste, except households, are responsible for determining if their waste is hazardous/restricted under current state and federal regulations. They are further accountable for arranging the proper storage, removal and disposal of such material.
